Both tank classes can get along just fine early on without a soul stone. PLD doesn't get Sheild Oath until 40. The benefits of Defiance are minimal before you have Storms and Inner Beast and the extra DPS from MRD with DPS cross class skills shortens fights to make up for the extra healing needs.

This has been my experience, too. I've gotten in Cutter, Brayflox, Haukke, Qarn: all with class tanks instead of job. All were doable. The first dungeon where we simply could not complete it with a class tank was Stone Vigil. And in that case the tank had been soloing as GLA to use cross class skills when they queued and forgot to equip their Soul Crystal first. They felt awful about it, and we all said it was cool and gave it a go, but they were simply taking too much damage for the healer to keep up with.

I'm sorry, but you are kidding yourself if you think the FFXI community was better than this. In a game that allowed Linkshell leaders to screw their members over, steal banks, copious amounts of account theft, and not to mention griefing by MPK and other means?

Reputation mattered in FFXI so you didn't have the huge amount of trolls like in FFXIV. It kept most rude players in check or they went to WoW.

On my first job I got railed hard in a dngn at level 46 for not having my level 45 af gear yet. Same kind of thing as what op posted in that I was not geared properly and ruining the dngn somehow lulz!!!! I didn't even realize there was gear at the time because it doesn't even show you in the quest that there is that reward so I was just sitting on it. I had no idea what the guy was even talking about. Some people are just ridiculous.

Did we even play the same game? You make it sound as if XI was some Utopia filled with kind people. It was filled with douchebags and the occasional genuinely nice person, just like this game. It was literally the same casual circle jerk and "QQ elitists are mean" community.

All I know is saying "Oh I guess that makes me elitist, sorry you guys" does not somehow make it so you aren't being elitist. At least some elitists take the "I'm this way, and I don't care" stance, rather than run around in circles trying to offer some kind of justification that suggests they aren't being snobs.
