It was only a cesspool if you had a bad reputation. "Cesspools" tend to be in the F2P/B2P/P2W MMOs and type of MMOs.
This community needs to get laid.
there were very few high levels in XI that was blatantly mean to low level players, most every player that got to 75 knew how tough it was.
most of the toxicity was from HNM LS competition and a lot of that has to do with the gang mentality that resulted from the game design.
sure there were some who trained mobs on low level players but that was a rarity, there were many more high levels who would kill Guivre just because.
Reputation mattered in FFXI so you didn't have the huge amount of trolls like in FFXIV. It kept most rude players in check or they went to WoW.
This is, unfortunately, all too common in the majority of online gaming communities. You just have to develop a thick skin, and/or find yourself a group of good people to hang around. A little friendly banter can really help with getting over these sorts of situations.
I'm from same server of Denzel (played with u some times and been in the Titan Attack Linkshell, u are amazing mate), and yes, some ppl are really really stupid. 1 error and you'll be kicked, harrassed, they don't want you to be new etc etc... I've 3 jobs at 50 one of each time, everey time i join a roulette I try to comfort or teach new ppl. If they continue to not listen then I'll get angry, but if someone says "tell me where is my mistakes" I'm proud of teach them... Chill out guys, it's a f**** game...
There are rude FF fans outside of the FF MMOs, just FYI. Post on any gaming board that you liked FFXIII (because some people actually did) and see how long it takes before the Final Fantasy hipsters bash you for it. Everyone thinks their favorite one was the best and they treat it like a fact rather than an opinion. To say that people are rude in FFXIV because it's not a real FF is disingenuous at best. People are rude because that's how they are and chances are they would be the same in any MMO.
As a relatively new player, I'm thankful I haven't met those kind of players (yet). Just last night I was in Titan and the group we were with were thankfully understanding (2 of the 4 of us were new to it). We may have died a few times but it's all a learning experience. I'll know it for next time.
