    In the days before test servers world firsts mattered in so much as the uber guilds would essentially be open-world testers. They'd post huge threads about encounter design lambasting the developers and demanding tweaks to enable the content to be beatable (while closely guarding their strategies) and after subsequent tweaks by the devs they'd lord it over the lesser guilds claiming they, and only they, beat the pre-nerf content and that everyone else should be grateful for their intervention in enabling the rest of the peasants to be able to play the game.

    Google Furor and Tigole for examples of this.

    I agree with the general sentiment of your post however.
