lol really? Sorry, but this just isn't worth expanding on. Keep assuming the scenario that tickles your fancy. It seems to be working just fine for you.Marketing or not, if you cannot produce concrete evidence to dispute a claim, you need to hush up. SE has gone as far as to make an official statement that could be challenged legally. Are you willing to do the work to do the same, or are you just going to be a side-seat speculator who thinks that empty cynicism actually as worth in the world?

You need to read it again. It said accounts, as in FFXIV service accounts. I myself have 3, 2 on one account and one on another. 2 was made for beta, none of them are active. They didn't answer on the question of active subscriptions.http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...-FFXIV-and-DQX
Your turn. Where's your evidence?

Someone needs to learn 1.8M accounts =/= 1.8M ACTIVE accountsThis is just echo-chambering for a non-issue.
Subscriptions are on the rise, not on the decline, as illustrated in interviews, that we've reached 1.8 million active subscriptions. Players leave and join the game continually, so it is expected that there are tales of people who have had their circle of friends quit.

They reached 1.8 million separate accounts in total. However, it was stated that only about a third are currently active around the world.
Anyway, to address the topic. I feel that my experience is pretty unique since I've never run coil or even beat all of the HM Primals. From the start, I took my time so I could enjoy the game to the fullest. Gradually, everything began to feel stale regardless of whether or not it was my first time participating in a piece of content or my tenth.
Nothing felt new, and this is largely in part to most of the end-game content consisting of predictable and memorable patterns. Going into CT, all I had to do was follow the group and everything went smoothly. There was no strategy involved other than following the specific mechanics. No organic actions from any of the bosses.
Everything ended up feeling like a chore and I had no desire to log on anymore. So, I cancelled my sub. There's just not enough to the content to compel me any longer. More trials and dungeons don't mean anything to me other than more patterns to memorize. I hate that. Yet, I want to love the game.
Marketing strategies just work so well on people. It's 1.8million copies sold, not active subscriptions. Please do not spread false information. There was a recent interview between SE and 4gamers on another thread here. Please read that. Yoshida was also hesitant to announce the figures until the china servers were up. Of course, it would inflate the numbers so it appears to be doing so well.

WoW goes through phases in which everyone resubs as a new patch with new content comes out, and then in the following months people slowly drop off and unsub or just stop logging in, but then resub and start logging in again as another new patch with new content comes out. In and out like the tide. This is what XIV will be if its successful.
If its not successful, then everyone will just stay gone and the game will die. SWTOR, and many other flavor of the year MMOs, kept the majority of their start population until about 6-ish months down the line, at their first tier-progression, and then the games suddenly crashed population-wise.
The real test of if this game will be 2.2 and 2.3 and if they revitalize the game or if the game starts hemorrhaging. I know a LOT of people who are subbed, but don't log in, and are basically waiting to see if 2.2 gives them a reason to log in again or if not: a reason to unsub.

One of my FCs entirely disappeared. On my LS there is a difference in how many people come on now compared to a few months ago.
They're still listed but you don't see them on.
I'm in the same boat.
For me it's the "AOE dodging fight system". Everything revolves around it, and it doesn't work on my computer. I've been hit by AOEs I was never inside as well as AOEs when I was on the opposite side of the room.
It emphasizes the weakness of the game and has people memorizing and dodging stuff before it happens to compensate.
My friend logs on and says she doesn't know what to do because she's not interested in the dungeon runs.
I wish they emphasized gimmicks instead of "AOE and more AOE". I don't remember having this kind of issue in FFXI no matter how much it lagged.

I guess I'm in the minority here in that I think the highlighted is what is causing people's misfortunes and not technically the game. It's not a hard concept to understand, Coil has a player lock out so if a group of people already have a static then try and find like minded people to make another group? You don't need to be in the same FC or Linkshell to make a static group for coil. The people who think "I only want to play with my FC/LS/Friends" are limiting themselves and it's their own fault. How did they come about making their friends to begin with? There are lots of people in this game, in my opinion, and it may or may not be an easy road but making new friends and finding similar play style people is an option. As leader I tried to talk 5 groups into reason, but while a person is reasonable and fair, people are generally selfish and irrational. The amount of personalities and different priorities in the mix resulted in a slow deterioration of friendships, and forming of new alliances and loyalties.
I'm in many Linkshells as well and see the same situation, more or less, being played out in other groups.
I, personally, wouldn't want a selfish or irrational person in my group or helping anybody else for that matter. I have an alt that I lvl'd specifically to help people in my ls/fc run coil if they need it. Most the time I end up going into party finders and we successfully complete the turns, except turn 5. Half the time some people mention in the group that "this should be a static", "is anybody looking for a static", or "is anybody needing another person for their static". It's not rare.
I also wouldn't mind if player lock outs got removed but to really blame friendships breaking or "strains on friendships/fc's" on a game mechanic is kind of unfair. In the end, it's all about the player attitude. It's always easier to blame the game I guess.

Your problem was thinking this would be FFXI-2, it is not.
Pretty, but empty. So superficial!
