What role do you use for learning new fights?

One of my FC members went on a little vent recently, and between that and starting to (finally) work on Garuda Ex myself, it got me thinking. One of the things he was kvetching about was how hard it is to learn a fight in DF as a DPS compared to tanks. Because after a few tries, everyone gives up, and he's stuck with a long queue again, while tanks can generally get back in much more quickly. So tanks (and to a lesser degree, healers) can get more attempts in a shorter time.

But the trade-off is that there's often a lot more to learn as a healer or a tank, and a lot more pressure & blame when things go wrong. You screw up as a DPS and you're a bad DPS, but everybody's used to that. And a lot of the time, unless you've got special tasks to do, most of what you need to learn (apart from the movement bits that everyone needs to know) is what target to hit next.

I don't really have a preferred role overall. Nothing that's, to me, "easy mode." Who has the hard job just depends on the fight. (Though, to be fair, my only 50 DPS so far is MNK, and I'm pretty sure that colors my perception.) So I'm always torn about which role to start with when it comes to learning new content. If I want to eventually tank it, knowing what the healers and DPS go through helps me be better at that anyway. And the same with those roles, too.

How about all y'all's? Do you go in with your personal easy mode first? Or the one true role? Or whatever slot is empty on the PF?

Lol being a tank who is late to the game im always told I should learn the fights as something else but a tank because when I mess up its an auto wipe and I get yelled at, so if you go by those logics how is anyone ever going to get a clear when the content is new.....

I don't use DF to learn a fight. People give up far too easily and always expect to get a win after the first 2-3 tries. Thanks to PF, I can just start a learning party or join one to learn the fights since there is an understanding between all party members that you're all learning the fight.Oh, and my main job is BLM so I use that.

LOL, yeah, I love how those who had to learn it for themselves always tell those who come after they should 'watch the video' to learn .. because everyone knows that only those who did it first are able to learn it on their own.

    Hi,
Create a party finder announcing "learning/training".

Lot of people are shy and don't create groups, and you will be surprised to see how much people that have done the content come just to help get the basics.

Depending on the fight you don't have the same perspective. Sometimes I think people try to know or explain far beyond their role and it confuses people for the 1st tries.

I can only go as Healer or DPS but I choose healer 1st.

I main tank so that's how I learned it. Ever since I'm done gearing my tank, I've been messing around with monk and black mage as DPS. I have to say, it's a lot easier and harder at the same time. Depends on the fight, DPS might have to watch out for stuffs more than tanks but tanks have to know certain other stuffs as well. Never did it as healer.

This applies only to people with multiple 50s, I assume?

That tends to be when the issue first really hits for most people. If there's somebody with multiple 16s stepping into Sastasha for the first time, no reason they couldn't reply (except forum limitations). But yeah, the answer's kind of self-evident for anybody with only one class/job/role.
