Dark Knight - Great Sword or Great Scythe poll

I agree that the sacrificing HP for strength is not a good idea. Soul Eater killed many Dark Knights in XI, and healing intensive fights like Titan or Ifrit X would not be friendly to a class like that. Dark Knight should be build around absorbing stats like draining strength or defense.

Also, sure you can flip the argument, and it's quite valid about personal preference. But if you redefine it, one side is arguing for a completely original class + job to add more variety to the game while against the addition. There are already monsters wielding scythes (Demons), so like it or not, they're already in the game being used as weapons. Now it comes down to why shouldn't players have access to them and build an interesting class. The other important argument is it is a role playing game where people great their characters. I'm not saying great swords should not be implemented. I am always in favor of more weapons and jobs to open up the world for people to play how they want to play.

I'm back and finally decided.

Scythe all the way if I can't have both.

Our start a whole new race/class and have two jobs branch out. Necromancer for DD will use Scythe and Dark/Deathkight use the Great Sword as tank.

I wonder what they will do about weapons that may overlap; for instance blu=sword (But pld/gld uses this as well) and thf=dagger (Gld,pld I believe), etc. Just branch out a $hit ton of jobs from classes and overlap them? I was just curious.

Blue Mage doesn't really have a weapon associated with it, so they can probably just give it whatever. Dumb Blue Cat from FFX used a spear and he had blue magic. As for Thief, they could do a lot of things, but I think they'll probably end up making a "Knife" class.

and the nunchaku might have been a flail for threshing rice. possibly. according to wikipedia. I can literally go and change that right now if I feel like it. It could just as easily have originated by some guy putting a sting through two sticks and deciding not to give up the first time he hit himself in the groin.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but when I studied Shorin Ryu karate we were taught that nunchaku indeed originated as a tool for threshing rice, and our source was the grand master of the school in Okinawa. In fact every weapon in that style was adapted from a farming or fishing tool, because it arose under a regime that made it illegal for civilians to own "real" weapons.

I share your disdain for the idea of using a wheat scythe as a weapon, though. Even improvised. Pitchfork, sure. Scythe? There is a such a thing as a war scythe, and they were indeed popular in peasant uprisings. But they were transformed into an effective weapon by reforging the blade at a 90 degree angle and strengthening the shaft with reinforcement. Scythes are popular weapons in fantasy and anime because they look scary, not because they are good weapons.

ONE FINAL THING: This is a fantasy game, arguing what's practical and what isn't is a complete waste of time. For example: Dual Wielding is commonly considered as too much effort for very little advantage and was never used on the battlefield. Yet people will literally have a heart attack if THF doesn't dual wield.

Yes and no. When people think of dual wielding two broad swords they are wrong. However, dual wielding was popular and common, especially in fencing. Your off-hand weapon was typically a main gauche (parrying dagger) that was used to block, not attack.

I personally would not mind the use of scythe as a weapon in FF provided it went to something more akin to a necromancer/ mage type class. In my opinion, the word Knight in the name of the job simply has to
much of a strong image leave much room for debate.











I feel there is no question they give off the image of a Knight.

This whole thread just makes me depressed, my favorite ff class is Dark Knight and it wont be in the game for at least a year.. ;___;
