They now have it in partially, but it needs more ways of instigating the search. If you have an item in your inventory, you can select the item, bring up its context menu (square button on controllers, I'd assume it's a right-click for mouse users) and select "Search" and it will tell you (output to the chat box) the locations of all such items you have, across both inventory and retainers.
However, that context menu that's available after you've already found the item is the only place I've come across that enables that search function. I suppose there might occasionally be a use for asking "is this all I have of this, or do I have another stack stashed away somewhere?" But the feature would be a lot more useful if we could search without having to already have found the item. In particular, the place I keep wishing for it is under the Timers window's sub-menu for supply/provisioning missions. When it tells me there's a provisioning mission to turn in 10 pieces of Raw Zircon, I want to look up from there whether I have any Raw Zircon. The crafting window's ingredients lists are another place where it's really needed.
It really seems as though performing the search function would have been the more difficult part for them to add, and they got that part done. Instigating the search should have been a simpler piece to include, but that part seems to be missing except for one of the least useful places for it.
EDIT:
Ok, apparently I mis-remembered how (or rather where) this works. (I mainly remembered that I'd tried it once, thought "that's cool" but then never had a use for it, while I kept wishing it were available from the timers window where I usually want it.) It is in the crafting log. And yes, that's a useful place for it, but I still think it needs to be in other places as well, like the timers window (supply/provision section). And if it's available as a / command from the chat window, then I haven't figured out how. It'd be good there, too.
