While better lighting and a slightly different rendering engine can make the game look better overall, there aren't too many ways to deal with texture aliasing as effectively as making higher resolution textures. I suppose some better texture filtering techniques might make a substantial difference, but typically if something is strong enough to make jagged lines disappear it also makes details disappear.

While I'm definitely looking forward to the enhancements that they have planned and I'm not bothered by the current textures most of the time, having no high resolution textures is an odd move. It's one of the few things they did right in 1.0. I am hoping we get the ambient occlusion 1.0 had at least, if not some texture enhancements (at least on characters). It's very jarring that SE seems to have designed a few story line cut scenes specifically to show off low resolution textures.
