Character name unusable after server transfer.

    ISP:
    Cablevision

    Type of Internet Connection:
    Cable

    Internet Connection Speed:
    2312.5 KB/sec

    Date & Time:
    March 1st, 3:20 am

    Frequency:
    Always

    Character Name:
    Glitch Hitch

    Race:
    Lalafell M

    World:
    Ultros

    Class/Level:
    30 Pugilist

    Area and Coordinates:
    N/A

    Party or Solo:
    Solo

    NPC Name:
    "None".

    Monster Name:
    "None".

    In-Game Time:
    N/A

    Steps:

I had a character called Glitch Hitch in Excalibur server but my friends where playing in Ultros. So I made a character in Ultros named Glitch Hitch to reserve the name just in case for that time when transfers between Legacy to Non-Legacy servers became available.

This Saturday morning, I was finally able to move my character from Excalibur over to Ultros. Once the transfer was done, I log in my account and deleted the character that I had made in Ultros to reserve the name, so that it would default to my old character that I just transferred... and it did. If I check the Lodestone, it shows only one character named Glitch Hitch in Ultros... my old character.

However, when I try to log in with my old, just transferred, character, a window pops up saying that I need to rename it in order to play, and the "accept" button is greyed out. It is expecting me to change name, even though I shouldn't have to, because I already deleted the character that was holding the name. In fact, if I try to make a new character in Ultros named Glitch Hitch, I will get an error saying that the name is already used and that I should choose another.

The accept button should not be greyed out even if the name hasn't been changed. If the name was really in use, we would get the same error as when trying to make a new character all the same. Even if I were to rename my character for something else, lets say: John Doe, and someone already has that name, I would be given an error message even tho the "accept" button was enabled to me because I typed something different than Glitch Hitch.

I should be able to "accept" the same name my old character has because I just made it available after deleting the 'name-holder' character.

Conclusion: The fact that the "accept" button in the rename window is disabled by default, is a problem that should be fixed.

At the time of transfer your character was flagged as there was already a character with that name on the target world.
That flag is not removed until you change name.

Essentially, you prevented yourself from keeping your name by doing this.

I'm not saying it's not an issue, but this is how it works.

This is where you did it wrong.
You should have deleted the reserved character just before the transfer, not after.
Like said above, you flagged yourself with a same name character and even if you delete the second one after the transfer, the transfer script had already flagged you're good character for a rename since it saw the other one before you deleted it.

Yes, I understand my character is flagged for name change, however I should be able to just click "accept" without having to change anything.

The name is available, and it has default to my character already as it was logic. The only problem is, that the "accept" button is unclickable until I change at least one letter of my character's name. This is totally unnecessary, because even if I where to change name, even if I choose a name that is already in use, the "accept" button will become available. It will be AFTER I click "accept" that it will check if the name is in use or not; if is in use, I will be asked to choose another name once again... so why then must the "accept" button be greyed out at all !?

Just leave the "accept" button always available regardless if I typed a new name or not. Because when I click "accept", it will realize that the name is indeed available and assign it to my character.

It is not that I did something wrong. There are no specific instructions anywhere that specify that once a character is flagged for name change, you MUST change its name or you can't continue using that character. Is not even intuitive or logic.

What is logic is that once the name is available, it should either default to the transferred character or just become available for anyone else to use. In which case, I would have the advantage to take the name back, as all I would have to do is click on the flagged character and "accept", just like it works on many other games out there. Some of them even rename your flagged char for something like "Glitch Hitch'Excalibur" and then you go and delete the "'Excalibur" part and hit accept and nothing goes wrong, because the name Glitch Hitch was available at the time you hit "accept".
