Is Marauder DPS viable end game or not?

I keep reading that they're tanks. Coming from every other game I've played, I play the warrior and always make sure I get a 2h as soon as possible, and by end game I'm always a dps. I either top the charts, or if not get very close to it. So I love that kind of style, I've been playing as one since I started game way back in the day.

So I rolled Marauder and was doing a bit of research I keep finding that Marauder's are seen as a tank roll and not dps? Is that wrong?

If so say I do dps and get to end game content, will I even see it or be shunned from it because of my personal choice to dps instead of tank?

No. MRD/WAR is not good dps

MRD/WAR are a tank class in this game and will never be able to DPS like the DPS classes. It is true that MRD/WAR does more DPS than PLD/GLA, but you will never be invited to a group for your DPS - You will always be expected to tank or off tank.

This isn't WoW where every class can be everything. Classes are a role in FF14 that they do well and they cannot change that role.

MRD/WAR role is to tank.

If you are really stuck on being a 2Handed DPS then role a Lancer/Dragoon.

Unfortunately, jobs in ffxiv are single-spec only and Marauder/Warrior gets the tank spec. That is not to say that marauder won't obtain a dps job (like smn and sch for arcanist) in the future, but you will not be dps until then. And before you ask when they will upgrade, the simple answer is we do not know. Dark Knight is supposedly in the works, but all we can say is the name. Specifics about base class, weapons, and whether it will be a tank or dps are purely speculative.

It is designed as a tank, and does DPS accordingly. Your peak performance will not even hold a candle to that of the weakest single target DPS job in the game, which are BRD/BLM basically. That, along with the fact that MRD is a melee role means your DPS is basically going to be crap if you're amazing, and negligible if you're mediocre/bad.

Thanks for the replies, I may just stay Marauder. DPS is nice, but I do like looking at my character how I do, Lancer doesn't appeal to me whatsoever. Reminds me of FFIX too much, and I was never a Burmecian fan.
I guess if I have to tank I will, I'm not new to tanking or anything but I guess that's what I'll be looking into for the time being.

If it's any consolation, Tanks are of very high demand in the game currently while DPS are a dime a dozen. You'll be blessed with near-instantaneous queue times on the DF and furthermore if you do your job decently, you will get commendations thrown at you like panties at a rock star.

I've seen CT groups that do have a MRD from time to time for the fun times on Atomos but it not viable at the moment for end game things like coil.

Although you can't out dps a good player playing a dps role well in PvE, you sure can in PvP in many cases with your burst damage available
