Abilities can't be used till animation ends.

I recently stopped subbing because quite frankly the game feels "unresponsive" compared to other MMORPGs I've played.

In FFXIV when I use an ability and the GCD (Global Cool-down) is activated, I cannot use an ability that is off the global cooldown until the animation for the ability I just used finishes. The same is true for animations that last longer than the GCD, I cannot use another ability till both the GCD AND my current animation have finished playing. This prevents me from using a move that's on the GCD and off the GCD at the same time (ie: interrupt + use an ability for rotation). Every other MMORPG I played "effects" (ie: damage, healing, etc.) happened as soon as an ability was used, not after the animation had finished. While FFXIV's combat looks fabulous, this "locking" of the input while animations are playing feels clunky. I am hoping SE switches more abilities (if not all) to do their affects as the ability is used instead of waiting for the animation to end.

    Edit:

Oh i read that wrong. Nah it's still a pointless complaint. The damage comes relative to its position in the animation, but it happens even if the animation doesn't play. (Trust me. I play on PS3, i know this.)

One of the reasons I actually kept subbing is because this game actually gives some respect to its battle animations. It probably feels clunky to you because you're used to playing MMOs that don't care.

The amount of time the game stops you from using an Off-GCD move while using an On-CGD move is so pathetically short that I can't believe you actually wrote a paragraph complaining about it. It's like .3 seconds, if even.

It's called spell weaving. Learn it. You cast them at the end of other spells so you can "weave" them in so by time the animation is finished so are the CDs of your other spells. Learn the game mechanics before making complaints.

You clearly didn't play version 1.23.

You really can't complain about an "animation lock" until you've experienced the 1.23 client.

When you went to use an ability or cast a spell, let's say you were doing Ifrit and you cast "Cure" on the tank, you'd be dead and you couldn't do a SINGLE thing about it if an eruption went off, it physically LOCKED you in place until the animation was done.

Counterpoints like this kind of bother me. Just because the system was worse, doesn't mean the system now is good.

The game would feel a lot better if the animation lock was gone. I understand aesthetics are important, especially to Final Fantasy games; but ultimately the game mechanics are the deal breaker. Hence why me, and any of my friends who played are no longer subbed.

I dunno, anyone I've played with hasn't complained about this so I can't sympathise.

I've played countless MMOs and can't really see what the OPs pointing out. Unless I've jaded over time and gotten used to it.

    Really?
Because there is countless of MMO out there that separate the movement section of your animations from your upper portion, to allow you to move and cast.
In games like WOW, GW2, etc. Abilities that are advertised as "instant" cast are truly instant as well. These will instantly stop your previous animations and merge/sync with a new animation; making it seemless and while not perfect, it's more than good enough.

Yet, none of the problems we have here, exist there.

^ This is exactly what I'm talking about. I don't understand why FFXIV has these problems... :/

What it seems like you want is a button masher, so go play Dynasty Warriors. You have to learn to weave your abilities within the GCD which is about one second after using an ability.
