We're getting a vanity system (no reason it can't also apply to 'bos) and I specifically remember the developers going "We're doing this so you can have your Chocobo tank even if you prefer it in WHM Barding!", and that decided to shit all over that concept with how you obtain the bardings...
On that exact same note i have specifically read them stating in big quotations that bard WILL have stats added to them some time in the future. So to be quite honest, its difficult taking what they say at face value when they seem to change their mind quite frequently.
