-Making Cure III self targeted doesn't make sense to me either. Often mellee and the tank need more healing than the group, and I don't want to be close enough that a cure III targeting myself would reach them. I also actually really like plain old Medica...

I have both macroed and unmacroed, I only use the unmarcoed Cure III in one fight - Ifrit EX, when I'm afflicted with searing wind.
The only instance I have to use Cure III rather than Medica 2 or Medica is during fights when the party is stacked up - Titan EX, sometimes Garuda EX and Turn 5. Its much easier to just hit a button then target myself. In these fights you cannot cast it on the tank as the tank will be too far away from the party. Its just easier to use a self-casted Cure III.
