I agree, however, the gameplay is what drives me (Personally) away from tanking; it is just plain boring imo. (I agree though, some people are just looking for a fight in-game).It's not so much as a lack of variety in tanking classes (and, to a lesser extent, healing classes) but people a lack of people willing to step into those roles. I, personally, would love to, but the attitudes of you people is atrocious. Especially in DF & PF.
Lately most of the poor attitudes that I've been seeing have been coming from tanks with an over-developed sense of entitlement.

Even so, there are barriers to new tanks... gear... maintaining aggro on epic dps... tanking itself is not too hard... but the gear discrepancy is very difficult on new tanks.
I know that leveling my tank was frustrating with higher level/well geared whms (aggrocity!) or dps... not because I didn't use my tools... but you start with few tools... and until you get good gear, it can be difficult to hold aggro.
Some people say aggro is a shared responsibility, and I agree... but for some healers and dps... they really do just do their jobs and it can generate a lot of aggro for a new tank to hold. If they don't hold it, they get screamed at... or even just feel like failures and discouraged.
If you want more tanks... I hate to say it... but make tanking easier.
Edit: I did like the suggestion about big numbers for mitigated/blocked damage.

Adding a new tank class wouldn't change anything on availability. The population of people who don't want to tank, simply don't level a tanking class. The same goes for a healer class.
As others have pointed out it's nothing to do with FFXIV, pretty much every MMO that has traditional roles run into this issue.
A simple answer is if you don't want to wait around as a DPS for a healer or tank is simply level one yourself.

here you have the same statement as aboveStop treating tanks like crap and more people will tank. Every MMO out there (trinity system) has the same issue ffxiv does.

Adding more tank classes will not make people want to play tank more. Either they want to play tank or they don't it doesn't matter how many classes there are that can tank.

If Dragoons had been a tank class and retained their Jump abilities, you can be damned sure there'd be a hell of a lot of tanks in this game.
It's not really about the role. People buy into the concept of class archetypes, and an MMO character is an extension of the player.
They can get more tanks by re-designing tanks to be more fun. Right now due to the long GCD and nearly every ability being linked to it, they are more frustrating than needed.
-End-game boss cast times tend to be shorter than the GCD. This means Shield Bash cannot be used to interrupt if I am doing a Halone combo to maintain threat. I can't react, and that is frustrating.
-Even if I do get the ability off, nearly every time the boss is immune to stun because other DPS classes have been spamming Stun as part of their own rotations.
- Paladin DPS needs to be increased, leveling up 1 to 50 is incredibly frustrating due to the low DPS. It doesn't have to be the same as a DPS class, it just needs to be better than it is right now. I don't know why Sword Oath is an auto-attack buff; Blizzard tried that auto-attack DPS nonsense 30 different ways with WoW Paladins and finally had to admit it is stupid design. With the amount of movement needed in this games, ability created burst damage will always be superior to auto-attack, both in practicality and in fun factor.
-Halone combo needs to be tweaked. Forcing Paladin to go through 3 GCD before they generate a spike of threat is dumb. There needs to be a way to generate burst threat other than spamming Flash (which does absolutely no damage). Fast Blade and Savage Blade need an increase in their enmity modifiers and/or increase in their damage, or both.
-Tanks need to be a little more iconic to the Final Fantasy universe. White Mages, Black Mages, and Dragoons are very clearly iconic FF classes, but Warriors and Paladins don't have any ability that screams "Final Fantasy" to veterans of the franchise.

I dont know why but I despise tank swap mechanics. I just do. I have no problem executing it (provoking and then using a prepped halone isn't hard) but I loathe it. I jumped at the chance of turning into dps when my coil group was learning turn 2 since they wanted to avoid melee dps at the time and I was the only one who can swap into a blm at the time. I ended up letting someone else = take my tank spot for turn 1 and 4 and I haven't tanked seriously since. Then 2.1 came and I was asked to tank when learning garuda ex and for some reason I was asked to tank swap the minions in some weird way and that was just a chaotic nightmare (grab garuda and a minion, then on some phase change the aggro swap minions, like wtf). Then I learned ultima hm and titan ex is also a tank swap. Then a few day ago I read in the interviews that more tank swaps will be coming. I feel like I'm allergic to tanking already.
Adding samurai as a tank would make me try harder to get over it..maybe..
