So, quality of what you use for the buff determines the quality of the buff? Using a shard might give you like 200%, a crystal 200% + craft-specific bonus, and materia 200% + craft-specific bonus + materia bonus?

Yeah something like that! And when you add a +1 materia it takes longer to wear down than a NQ materia.
