I see mining cheap materials as a huge mistake. If I'm looking at time/gil, it's often better to buy materials for crafting.

I mine whatever is selling high, and buy cheap materials for crafting. Gold Ore tends to sell high, or you can make nuggets, or gear, but that node is once a day. Clusters in Mor Dhona are every 4 hours (if you have Min and Btn), and you can do crafting leves while you're there (cobalt ingots, and raptor leather are nice profit). However, the biggest chunks of gil I've earned are from 2 star gear.
