Rather funny they say they want it to be authentic..like "real life" when ears don't look right with certain gear and we still have no behind to sit on. I just find that statement ironic personally.
YOU KNOW WRITING YOUR THOUGHTS IN CAPS LOCK and all bold with a big character doesn't really make them look more right than the other. It just makes you look pretentious.
You don't like the effect, too bad for you, but that's working as intended and has always been so. And it makes sense. You are painting metal, what did you expect, for metal to magically change its molecular properties and reflecting different wavelenghts of light? No, there is now a coat of paint on top of the metal.
Get over it.
i always wondered if was my imagination that the dyes acted like that, perhaps they could come out with metalic dyes?
But...it looks terrible.Greetings,
We checked with the Graphics team to see if there was anything shady going on regarding this, and they wanted us to pass along their reasoning as to why the appearance of gear changes after being dyed.
Metal equipment was created to have an enamel-like look to it when it is dyed, just like if you painted something metallic in real life. Similarly, cloth equipment was also designed to function the same way as real life, so the texture changes when it is dyed because the cloth is soaking up the dye.
As both types of equipment were created like this intentionally, the team does not have any plans to change the textures.
Like really outright terrible
It's why people don't paint metal very often in real life.
Please don't defend them for this. It's a pointless feature that makes armor look worse. The realism excuse makes no sense when you consider nearly literally everything else this game has to offer. There is a difference between Matte and Gloss paint. And the rare times people do paint metal, it's usually with a gloss paint.
If they're so intent on leaving this the way it is, they could at least provide us with a gloss option.

Considering this is a forum where people can go to express their thoughts on the video game they play... we do not have to just "get over it" because some devs said "This is how we do it." It's our job as consumers to point out when there's something in the game we're consuming that we don't like.
This is a game where you can spend 24/7 in heavy plate armor with full range of body motion. Your endurance is superhuman - can run forever, fight forever, and just generally be active without tiring. You can teleport all over the place. You can fling fireballs from your hand and raise people from the dead. When gathering plants and wood, you often find incredibly divergent items on a single loot list. Obviously, realism quite frequently takes a backseat in a fantasy video game. How dye works should be one of those times, as well.
Gloss paint or coat of paint that will add the wet/gloss looks /nod.
This is... a really stupid decision. And the art team pulling the "realism" card is absurd. You want realism in the art style? Give me weapon harnesses and scabbards first. Oh, and long hair that doesn't clip through shields.
That was the point of the entire thread, to see if it was intentional or by accident.
This entire thread was a request to build evidence, show the communities feedback and illicit a developer response.
We achieved all three, your snarky and frankly quite rude response wasn't needed.
As for the bold and "Welp" that was mostly to bring attention to the developer quote and my initial reaction.
I wasn't trying to "make myself look right" but more of a "Well, that was a stupid reason" which was the initial reaction of the person(s) who actually asked me to make the thread in the first place.
(•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■) Deal with it if you don't like it.
This is a video game. I can fire lightning bolts out of my posterior.
Something as finicky as "Well in real life if you apply paint to....x" is a rather silly notion and the majority of the people who've responded agree.
As a games developer and 3D artist, I find this notion more than a little odd given the fantasy setting, that is currently trying to tip its favour into High-Fantasy-Vanity more-so than the original 1.0 versions approach to gear which was to stick with as realistic an approach as possible.
It's a request, way to make yourself look pretentious, not to mention rude.
Wait...what game was it we were playing again?
Ah yes, "Real-Life-Limitations Fantasy XIV".
Yes I'd completely forgotten we were bound the the laws of physics and semantics of the real world, silly me.
Why did you have to say this exactly? The thread was posted as an inquiry and a request, I as much as you have the right to express what I'd like to change in the game.
They developers have given their answer, so there's nothing to "Get over".
However, that doesn't mean people can't stop to leave their own feedback, which is currently weighing in the favour of the original post.
BASIC FEEDBACK.
If you don't like something, you request for it to be changed. If they decline it and explain why and you're still not satisfied you also explain why in the hopes that they may reconsider and take your points into consideration also. Without Feedback, what's the point. If you're still having difficulty understanding my point, this little info-graphic says more than I ever could.
Stop trying to place yourself above others and think before you open your mouth (or in this case, type on your keyboard).
Pretty much everything Gramul said. We've recieved their response, but that doesn't mean you have to roll over onto your back and accept it.But...it looks terrible.

Also a tail that doesn't magically appear through armor and clip the living daylights out of it would be nice...
