This was because every gear in different color was a own model. The main reason why we couldn't dye the gears in every color but only in specific colors during 1.0.Back during 1.x, when the dye system was significantly more difficult to utilize and far more limited, dyed gear kept the shine of it's original form. You had be able to craft the item, had to use an undyed item and craft the dye onto it, and you couldn't switch the color after you dyed it... Still, the red cobalt cuirass was amazing looking so it was almost worth it. Dyed gear was it's own piece of equipment though, sold as a different item with the color in the name... dunno if that has something to do with it.
