Metal equipment was created to have an enamel-like look to it when it is dyed, just like if you painted something metallic in real life. Similarly, cloth equipment was also designed to function the same way as real life, so the texture changes when it is dyed because the cloth is soaking up the dye.

As both types of equipment were created like this intentionally, the team does not have any plans to change the textures.
    But...it looks terrible.
    Like really outright terrible

It's why people don't paint metal very often in real life.

Please don't defend them for this. It's a pointless feature that makes armor look worse. The realism excuse makes no sense when you consider nearly literally everything else this game has to offer. There is a difference between Matte and Gloss paint. And the rare times people do paint metal, it's usually with a gloss paint.

If they're so intent on leaving this the way it is, they could at least provide us with a gloss option.

I'll just put it out there that I think your graphics team chose a really weird feature to try and make realistic. I don't think it's that unreasonable in a video game to want metal to look like metal, regardless of color.

So why not add an option on the dye screen to select the type of finish you wish to give to gear after it's dyed like matte, metallic, etc.? More options are always great, or if you want to go with the overcomplicated and more work/timesink involved route add recipes to craft metallic dyes and what not.

Seconded, this would be an amazing idea! I find the current "enamel" coating to look pretty shoddy on pretty much all equipment, but other people might feel different. I would prefer the first idea personally, but having another style of dyes that are slightly more complex to make while adding a shiny look would also do the justice of granting crafters a bit more relevance! LvL 50 metallic-dye recipes... I think it's well worth bringing this to the devs.

This, plus its perfectly possible in the real world to stain materials with dye rather than paint them. I dont quite get where the graphics team were going with cloth dyes being different to just cloth... i dont see any differences when i walk into a shop O.o

With the aforementioned, the excuse of how dyes work in a real life concept are just... Dumb. No other words to express this. We can Summon flaming unicorn mounts from thin air, but keep the metallic shine when an item is dyed oh lody no. Graphics team had done a great job on other things but this ideology is pretty flawed.

Either add glossy/metallic dyes or undo this... it's pretty stupid.

Hmm, interesting answer. I would reply that if it's dyed in this real life way should it also have a real life decay? You would think that painted armor would chip and flake away, clothing would fade. Also if you applied wax to painted armor it would add a glossy effect.
