I noticed this issue the very first time I tried applying dyes, and pretty much stopped using it since (not to mention you can't get some colours, or there is no actual black....)

It is easier to notice this with plate armours (GLA, MRD, PLD, WAR), like Cobalt Cuirass where the majority of it is shiny and all.

I always believed the reason for this is something like putting paint on cars - thus the shiny goes away. ;9

This is why I never dye my metallic armor. And also why I really don't like the Zenith armor. It looks so cheap when put up against the regular Relic armor.

Thank you for bringing it up Shioban.

An easy way to point this out is by using the mythril cuirass (lv40 tank gear). It is incredibly shiny, but when you add dye it dulls out significantly.

See if you can get a screen comparison using that armor type-- almost any cuirass will do other than the militia (i55) cuirass. This has been a concern of mine for a while but during beta it didn't get much attention.

Back during 1.x, when the dye system was significantly more difficult to utilize and far more limited, dyed gear kept the shine of it's original form. You had be able to craft the item, had to use an undyed item and craft the dye onto it, and you couldn't switch the color after you dyed it... Still, the red cobalt cuirass was amazing looking so it was almost worth it. Dyed gear was it's own piece of equipment though, sold as a different item with the color in the name... dunno if that has something to do with it.

    Agree entirely.

This is most visible on plate armor. Prior to the preview feature, I tried dying my first light armor (GLA MRD LNC PLD WAR DRG) yellow, in hopes that I'd get a nice looking golden finish, but it turned out flat mustard instead. I Also tried dying it gray, got a very matte finish with no shine, kinda looks like you're coloring your outfit with matte latex wall paint, rather than getting a proper tinted metal.

This was because every gear in different color was a own model. The main reason why we couldn't dye the gears in every color but only in specific colors during 1.0.

I hope this isn't due to some unfortunate technical limitation. I mean, they went out of their way to actually build this system from the ground up. Seems like a waste to be unable to keep the specular gloss.
Maybe that's a fix that can come with DX11. They where talking about being able to use new shaders for it.

Sounds like SE working really hard to overcomplicate what should be an incredibly simple system. As they usually do...

Note how the undyed edges stay shiny. Also, an interesting feature about this armor is that it seems to turn more silvery in sunlight when undyed.
But anyway, like Shioban said, it's low priority but nice to have.
