    I liked the fact that FFXI managed to stay such a great game and add several expansions, missions and content that it really was not necessary for people to want to level one class/job beyond the cap. You could always level another job! Leveling never ended... But a little stability level cap wise was comforting.

    Though don't forget, alot of the challenge over all, came from level capped missions/quests/bcnms/enms/promys..blahblahblah :P

    Gear that comes out as sidegrades becomes boring fast, runs the risk of becoming obsolete on release, or being subpar. FFXI's Sea, COP dynamis, and Hydra HNM didn't see much action because the effort was too great and the gear they offered sucked.
    Makes sense to me. Zilart NMs (sky & the three ground kings) were easy to kill and had lots of good loot. Everybody complained that they were excessively camped, so S-E introduced new NMs (like the ToAU kings) that were hard to kill and had no good loot. Nobody really camped the new NMs, so mission accomplished.

    My name is a killing word.
    (Seriously: "Caerith" was a forbidden name when I signed up on the forums.)

    Eorzea should be a world, not a lobby.

    ehh i think raising the cap every 1-2 years is a sucky idea, but for the opposite reason, its to slow/low the 50 cap feels stifling as it is. there is hardly any gears, and not that much power progresssion so far. i think they probably need to have a cap of at least 60 or 70 before they slow down to the once every 1-2 year plan.

    While it is definitely true that sidegrades have their disadvantages, like you said, it's not usually as bad as a level cap increase.

    Like I said, personally, I think keeping the level cap the same is a better alternative, since it allows a lot more room for old content to stay relevant instead of outright killing it off.

    Well, just as an observation. I dont often rememeber camping any NM, big or small, with a worthy drop in XI - With out competing with someone or a party or another ls - If no one was there. Its your lucky day.

    And wolfie. Sea torques? Noivo? I guess you weren't a fan. Maybe IF AV would have been do-able by the masses?

    @Op

    To me, it isn't really about the gear equipment becoming obsolete as much as it is the endless chase. I would really like to see a game become about more than getting gears and levels.

    Other than that small difference of thought, I really agree with your op. Spending time making content to go with the levels and gears already designed, would not only be more efficient than balancing new levels and gear and making new content, it would help keep the game from growing cumbersome with obsolete areas, quests, and whatnot. Often times, such things have to be left in game for the simple reason that pulling them out might cause more trouble in the coding than it's worth.

    I played mage jobs. Sea group content was pointless for me, I got everything from soloing.

    I think it would be cool if they added something like the relic gear and weapons now for that long term goal to aim for. Then as the cap increased you could use a combination of difficult quests and materia to upgrade that gear so it is no longer out dated and back to being top tier.

    These items would have to be super hard to get though so like I said it would be a long term goal but as long as you could make a bit of progress each time you logged in that would be ok. When the cap rises maybe for those lucky enough to have these items the new completion of the new endgame could give the materia needed for the upgrade to the Relic's.

    Last I checked, people weren't regularly doing AV.
