Chocobo leveling help ( not guide )

After i finally decided to unlock the chocobo companion i tried to level it, to no avail after killing dozen of mobs of every level ( including fates ) my choco companion hasn't even gotten 1 exp lol i think.
    It just says 0/100 .
Or am i looking at the wrong thing on the companion screen?

Chocobo's are granted 25% of the XP you would get yourself from a kill. So if you got 100 XP for your character, it would get 25 XP itself. Keep in mind that a Chocobo actually TAKES XP away from you, for itself. So for my example, 100 XP for you and 25 for the Chocobo, means if it was not summoned, you would have gotten 125 XP.

The XP notation in the battle log appears somewhat odd to say the least.

Your personal experience is as follows:
    "You gain <amount> (<percent>%) <class> experience points."

Your Chocobo's experience gain is as follows:
    "You gain <amount> experience points."

I'd just like to say that everything in this post is wrong. From the math all the way down to what is actually being said.

First off, 25% of 125 is not 25. Its 31.25.
Secondly, if that were true, you would be getting over 1200 exp per lvl 50 mob. Last I checked, you don't. What actually happens is that you and your chocobo both get 100% exp from the kill. The exp that goes to your character is then given whatever exp bonuses you have at the time(rested bonus, fc buff bonus, etc). The chocobo however, does benefit from the chain exp bonus.

Just to repeat myself, the chocobo DOES NOT steal your exp.

EDIT: Also just to add on to this, your chocobo will not get any experience if your level is too high. So if you wouldn't normally get exp from the mob, your chocobo won't get any. The only exception to this is when you're at 50 at which point only high level mobs will give your chocobo exp. I don't know the exact levels that you can get exp from but generally you want to kill 49/50 mobs.

Ah this is the answer i was looking for,
So i need to kill level 50 mons and do level 45+ fates to get exp?
Cuz i was confused to how this would work if i was level 50 with a level 50 chocobo. I'll try that lol
Also is it more effective to level up in parties or alone?
I'm assuming party tho, also how long would it take to get from rank 1-5?

Not exactly 100% exp on each.
First there is a party malus. If you are in a party (with a player or a companion) you get a bit less exp than solo (but the kill speed would be of course faster).
also the player can get some exp bonus the Chocobo can't get.

at most, you'll have 2 full parties of 4 people each (4 people + 4 Chocobos in each party). One party is the "Pull party" and the other is the "Kill Party". The Pull party will have one member round up all the enemies and gather them up at the kill point. This gives the pull party claim on all of the enemies that are going to be killed. Once the enemies are gathered up, the Kill party will AoE the enemies down, while the Pull party does not attack at all. The pull party gets full exp for their chocobos since they had claim on the enemies, thus guaranteeing 100% exp regardless of battle participation. The Kill party gets full exp for their chocobos as the kill party did more than enough damage to the enemies to have their contribution rewarded will full exp. This way, both parties get full exp and everyone wins!
    Exactly.
If you claimed the enemy you get 100% exp and the enemy drop the moment it die.
If you attack an already claimed enemy, you need to do at least 30% of the dmg to get the exp (no enemy drop in this situation).
    This is called kill-sharing.

Yes that is what I said. Although I did not know there was a decrease due to being in a party. Must be really small because I've never noticed it before.

But point is, chocobos do not steal your exp. They never have and they never will. No idea where people got that crazy idea.

Something to keep in mind; chocobos do not get the fate completion exp that your character would normally get for getting bronze/silver/gold in a fate. They do however get exp for all mobs you get credit for.

The XP notation in the battle log appears somewhat odd to say the least.

I know you are trying to help, but your math is appalling.

This is not true, Chocobos get 100% of the XP you do without boosts (rested/non-chocobo FC buff/Off-class buff) but only from mobs you do over 25% of the damage to and/or claim. The best way to level is FFXI style and stand in one spot and just grind on mobs. It sucks, but it is the only way to level a chocobo. The only exception to the no bonuses rule is EXP chains which will buff both you and the chocobo equally.

You only get credit for kills that you claim, and it has to be high enough to give you experience, I think within 10 levels of you, so unless you are one of those black mages that does nothing but runs around spamming blizzard 2 for claim and letting everyone else kill stuff for you, fates are going to be a horrible place to level your bird.

Oh and the enemies health bar and name tag MUST be red. If it is pink, that is not tagged as yours and you will gain nothing from it. And neither will your pet.
