The icons are meant to be more convenient for you when your looking for particular meldable items so if your looking to see if you can meld a certain materia onto pants you always can look at the pants icon which is always in the same place and just scroll down the list and see if it is lit up or not. In the text based system the text would move around so you would have to potentially reread the entire list to see if what you wanted was in it with the icons you should never have to do that (This is assuming you can see/understand the icons).

Those icons are absurdly difficult to understand as compared to the previous text blocks...

This is kind of stuff I wish in 2.0 there is option for players who like icons to have UI setup to Icon mode, and for those that want text list to have UI set to text.

Kind of like the talk forums had long time ago about spells like FFXI/Classic FF style where you have option Magic > spell list as to action bar with spell icons.

I don't know, I can understand the icons honestly, the THM symbol with a stick under it clearly means 2-handed THM weapons etc. The materia icons are easy to understand as long as you know the class symbols (which are probably the more confusing of the batch IF anything.)

Since a pants icon clearly means melded to pants and so on. I agree though, this whole icon only stuff is getting a bit overboard in new MMOs and prorgams, I am old fashioned too, which is why I adore the FF UI of old.

I would like a classic FF UI with the mini menu on the left for Attack, Magic, Items etc.

Oh I get ya know, I actually prefer the icons if im honest, I find it much quicker to tell what materia is for what item.

If your remotely interested I'd shoot SE a resume, they may have a relocation assistance program.

Obviously if moving your familly was within reason beyond just logistic of moving. I know what it's like to make that kind of decision for your familly. Too bad they wont just pay you to do it remotely!
