What's wrong with high supply when demand is high as well? You could get just one catalyst in an hour but it wouldn't matter if nobody wanted to buy it. If you can get 4 stacks and buyers demand goes up to 5 stacks then gatherers are not bringing in enough supply.

You can't just look at the rate of acquisition and make assumptions from that. If one catalyst goes for 30k and you get one in an hour BUT now you get 10 catalysts that go for 3k per unit in an hour... it's all the same.

1 materia costs more than 3 stacks of catalysts. Someone's stimulating the economy... it's not DoL

And it's also harder to get one materia than 3 stacks of catalysts. The only thing you are guaranteed is something. Gatherers know that when they gather for an hour, they get what they wanted. Somebody can turn gear into materia and get totally opposite of what he wanted. The price is dictated by those factors.... just because it's harder to acquire and thus more expensive doesn't make it 'better'.

I'm making gil from catalysts so obviously I am needed to gather them.

Precisely. If DoL wasn't needed the demand would be near zero and no profit would be made.
