Playing a game isn't supposed to be fun! It's all about optimizing your performance! Those who can't manage to fulfill performance criteria up to 3rd decimal digit better not hope for a <insert high level content here> party invite!

Dilly-dallying through the game with average performance is not
It can be fun to a point, but gets out of hand when things start getting personal over a 3% difference in damage. Kind of like the XI Monk forums on ZAM circa 2005-2010.
There's nothing wrong with solving the riddles of the game like str/attack/dmg relationships, but as with all things on the Internet there are those incapable of not taking things too far.
It stops being fun when people exclude you from an event because you don't have the best items, which many times were the rewards from said event.
