Things like /countdown are easy to add of course. Including a description of an NPC's services below or above the name of the NPC isn't so easy. So they just put the Kanji describing these services at the start of the NPC's name. But this only exists in the Japanese language client. The other languages would have to split the names of NPCs into two lines. One for the name and one the description.

I do not even think they are aware of the problem. If they are I'm sure if you asked them why they haven't fixed this so all clients have one line for the name and one line for it's service, they'd say it wouldn't be possible cuz all NPCs can't have multiple names. Why wouldn't using 「\n」 (or 「¥n」 since the half width character ¥ replaces \ on Japanese keyboards) in the name and treating it as a hard wrap (newline) character work.
It's only silly to people who didnt want it and as you said this most likely took little to no effort to develop/implement....
