They are altering game files, translating posts from the Community reps, speaking with the Dev team and have access to a lot of infomation on the games state.

If it were my company I would want them to be there in person, not half way across the world.

Fear, there's already an NA team. I find the requirement for Localization to live in Japan odd for that reason. They already have Remote teams in the US that do the things you specified.

This isn't the 90s. They could totally do this. Maybe they just want the whole team to be there for morning TaiChi?

All the NA team does is take already translated JP > English text and make it sound right for the English language, they dont have to have access to near as much stuff as the JP side of things.
