to get a copyright, you simply need to 1) affix, 2) an original work in 3) some tangible medium. the bar for 2 is really really low. phonebooks (for those who remember what they are) were copyrightable. databases of public information are copyrightable. not the data in and of itself but in the presentation of that data.
this is not to be confused with patents which allow you to exclude others from the marketplace that develop inventions that "read on" or fall under your patent claims.
