I think this would be a very cool feature, you could perhaps have a card battling system, perhaps like Pokemon or whatever they have in WoW (never really seen more than 2 mins of footage of that game, don't have any interest in it).

I am willing to bet that what khmfdoom mentioned about the legality of using a similar feature from WoW might cause problems (you'd be surprised what small things people try to copyright), I am certain as long as they made a different type of system they could find a way round this, which is what he was getting at?

If you click on the above link you'll get a further understanding of copyrights and trademarks, they can cover so many small things that you wouldn't think of it's unreal.

They might not be able to copyright the general feature of minion battles, but their particular design of how it works, however complex or simple the changes need to be to allow them to avoid being sued might mean the mini-game is either very close or extremely different.

Who knows until they actually try to act on the idea?

This is exactly what i was getting at i didn't think i would have to clearly layout all the small things. That can be the road blocks that cause certain features from being in certain games being called an idiot for this statement clearly shows people have word vomit and don't think before they speak.

Thanks duelle, so yeah it seems as if it's almost a complete rip off from Pokemon given it's 'WoWkemon' names and abilities in-game? So clearly if they managed to do this without any kind of problems from the makers of Pokemon than SE shouldn't have too much difficulty.

FFXI's Pankration as mentioned earlier on in the post is effectively the same sort of system, just takes a lot of time setting the fights up, but at least they have a system they could use and modify on if they chose to.

to get a copyright, you simply need to 1) affix, 2) an original work in 3) some tangible medium. the bar for 2 is really really low. phonebooks (for those who remember what they are) were copyrightable. databases of public information are copyrightable. not the data in and of itself but in the presentation of that data.

this is not to be confused with patents which allow you to exclude others from the marketplace that develop inventions that "read on" or fall under your patent claims.

I always wondered why they bothered with Minions when, instead, they could have made it so the Minions were just cards... I mean, think about it... You can get infinite numbers of certain Minions from FATEs/Dungeons/DoL/DoH/etc., then you have the super rare ones which you can only really get once. It would be pretty much exactly the same as FFVIII/FFIX card games. Do I throw Qiqirn cards, which I can make a lot of (though that might be costly, but it boosts the economy at least) at my enemy, or do I use my Dalamud card that I'd only be able to get again from beating someone else foolish enough to use it? Had the exact same dilemma with the old card games.

Maybe just like FFVIII we an get a Card ability to turn Minions into cards... Though I really would miss having that spiky red yoga ball following me around...

Patch 2.3 really needs to be sooner so we can have the Golden Saucer already.
