I really think Final Fantasy XIV needs a departure from its 8 year old sibling, change things up, and become a modern contemporary MMO.

That would be the ambitions of Rift against WoW and should not be the agenda for a Final Fantasy title. As one of the earlier 'Letters from the Producer' stated via the initial poll, the majority of players on FFXIV have played FFXI and as such most were expecting an easy transition rather than a focus to derail a perfectly sound formula.
