I chose Conjurer specifically because it had access to healing and nukes. Specifically because it was very versatile. Hell, I chose this game because classes were so versatile. If they get rid of that versatility in favor of pigeon-holed roles, then they are throwing away the one good thing they did with FFXIV from the start.
It's worth noting that you can do the same as a tham (to an extent). Though their healing potency doesn't seem to be quite as high as con, sacrifice is nothing to scoff at. Unless we're fighting enemies with high burst damage, I can usually keep my party up using just sacrifice.

To be honest, the two classes seem to be split more along the lines of how they function rather than roles. Con is burst healing/damage in a circle, while tham is healing/damage over time focus via cones.

Herein lies the crux of the matter. I am of the opinion that we have two decent mages already (bar some minor technicalities) One that is dmg/heal over time and one that dmg/heal in an area. Why the need to split then? That would just prove to nerf one class IMO. The classes (moar mages!) should be more tailored for specific functions but these ones are fine enough as they are. As much as I like FFXI and junk, I really think Final Fantasy XIV needs a departure from its 8 year old sibling, change things up, and become a modern contemporary MMO.

(edit: I really shouldnt attempt to post when I have just woken up >_>)

That would be the ambitions of Rift against WoW and should not be the agenda for a Final Fantasy title. As one of the earlier 'Letters from the Producer' stated via the initial poll, the majority of players on FFXIV have played FFXI and as such most were expecting an easy transition rather than a focus to derail a perfectly sound formula.

I totally agree with you on this.

The adv. idea is really great =)

Red Mage can basically be a stronger Conjurer.

White mage can have weaker black magic spells but advanced White magic (and then Black is the opposite). --- But it could always be made less linear, So the 'White mage' side could just have different ways to heal or more abilities/benefits bonuses, vice versa with the 'Black mage' (Different buffs/Debuffs).

Thaum. could always split off into a mixture of Geomancer, Time/Blue Mage and Summoner (I dunno)

    Just an idea though

-- Although I really like what people are saying about Conj. At the moment

Why should XIV not have ambitions to move forward? XI was a perfectly sound formula 8 years ago, when both the players and the competition were very different, and developers were still learning what to do with an MMO. Do you think SE isn't capable of advancing the genre?

Well I wouldn't say its about advancing Final Fantasy, more of keeping what should be the same similar. One such thing was the job names and race names, which in FFs past have changed now and again but if its THE SAME RACE/JOB why can't we keep the same name? It's still called 'Final Fantasy' after all, some of it must remain the same to its core. Much like the spells have remained the same for years. What I'm trying to say is SE can't move forward with the FF genre without keeping what is integral (partying/conflict/colored mages/races/etc). To stray from the 8-years mature formula of FF online, would be an utter betrayal.

That said I honestly have no idea how THM and CON fit in with long standing traditions of WHM BLM RDM or even Green Mage or Time Mage. To me this is a direct result of having strayed too much from their FFXI perfectly working formula.
