Exactly. DRG in FFXI was less traditional DRG skill (ala Jump skills) and more just a pseudo-pet Job revolving entirely around the wyvern and how it's AI functioned.

Besides, controlling a wyvern in XIV just wouldn't work, due to the game's lore stating dragons are entirely evil. DRGs are the elite cavalry troops of Ishgard who have been long at war with the dragons and regard anyone who has the slightest alliance with them as heathens. Hence, no wyvern pet for you I'm afraid.

Ishgard says they're evil...but go do the whole DRG job quest line...I can see things changing drastically once the level cap is raised...

In regards to DRG story: I mentioned this to a few acquaintances in game and they thing I'm just "being illogically" optomistic. I think This:

Alberic: When that darkness brushed against me, the selfsame torrent of emotions swept over me as those I experienced twenty summers past.
But there was something else besides. There was a voice, and it lamented the rift that divides dragons and men.
You will come to comprehend what I speak in due time. Till then, I pray that you will ever use your newfound strength in the name of justice.

is where I got that "illogical" hope.

This is flat out wrong. FFXI’s Dragoon had 9 Jump Related abilities compared to FFXIV’s Dragoon who has a paltry 4 Jump Attacks. This means that the Dragoon in FFXI had more jumps, and more support for its jumps than the Dragoon in FFXIV. Now I won't argue which is the better DPS class, because that argument won't get me anywhere. But the fact is, if you are looking strictly at which had more support for the signature move of the Dragoon Class Archetype as it has been presented in Final Fantasy as a Franchise, then the answer is hands down FFXI.

By the way, a Wyvern is NOT the same Species as a Dragon. They may be the same Genus, but they are not the same Species. As such it is entirely possible for there to be good Wyverns, even if the overwhelming majority of their cousins, Dragons, are evil.
