I always use the low-level medicine in low-level content. So many quests and such toss potions and ethers at you, which, on the market of the server I'm on, you could just as well sell for a few gil each to an NPC or on the MB, or just use them. So I use them quite regularly. Even some higher-level content, I carry them. I have Spine Drops HQ for duties like the final boss of Stone Vigil, or the Dhorme Chimera in case people screw up and I get a paralysis on me and the healer is going to be very busy. Or yeah, popping an Ether for that one extra cast that might make a difference, or an encore on the Bard songs. Good stuff.
The other circumstances I use them in is in the Binding Coil of Bahamut, depending on gear and such. There are some tricky spots where the food may give you the Accuracy and Vitality boosts you need, but especially as a DPS for maximum damage output or as a tank for a burst in HP or such any medicine can be quite useful.
That being said, that healer could have just as well been popping medicine instead of relying on a BRD as a crutch.
As a spell-caster I carry a few Echo Drops and some X-Ether or Mega Ether, just in case. I've only needed to use Echo Drops once or twice, and the ethers around 5 to 10 times, so definitely not necessary, but it can be nice in a pinch. I've found the ether to most useful on my Black Mage if I derp up my Flare rotation.

I always carry a supply of mega ethers(HQ), spine drops, and echo drops. I tend to reach for the ethers earlier in the fights. One nice thing about the latter two is you can use them on other people. It's always useful to be able to heal your own ailments so the healer doesn't have to eat that Esuna/Leeches cooldown time, or to be able to sprint to the healer to dump an echo drop down their throat if they get silenced.
As WHM I carry x-ethers and hi-elixirs but I don't really need to use them in any content at the moment. I did use them when we were learning turn 5 and on our first few wins. All our DDs also used mega potions of INT / STR / DEX for Twintania snake phase. I assume they still do. Those items are very useful when group is learning new content because DPS tends to be a bit lower when people aren't used to attack order and don't yet know when to use which attack buffs etc. They aren't expensive either so there's no reason not to carry them with you.

I always carry Hi-Exliers and stat potions around with me. Stat potions are used in T5, while Hi-Elixers are used during emergency moments where one of the healer died or I'm not topped off enough and need emergency topping.

It's not a necessity but I do carry pots. either a mnd boost or some mp restoration always handy
The only complain is that they should separate some cooldowns
I'd go for 4 different cooldowns Restorative, Status Cure, Buff and Ward
As side note, as heal sometimes I feel I am very good at managing my MP but there is a BRD using ballad at the right times without us healers asking or noticing![]()
As a healer I often use mega-eths, and always keep 3+ stacks on me.
I know our DPS go through their INT/STR/etc pots like crazy. At least one every attempt on a fight.
Terrible healer, or undergeared, or both. Potions on my server are dirt cheap since they drop everywhere from chests, so there's no excuse but laziness for not having them. I carry around a stack of HQ X-Potion/Ethers and Hi-Elixirs for random emergencies though.

I use them, cos I dont trust other players to be helpful
