Thanks. I just figured it out, I have to use both thumbs to push in the touchpad. When i only use one it doesn't work for some reason.

There is an advanced option in configuration which allows left / right part of the touchpad to be used to scroll lef / right through the HUD items - you can switch that off (it's on by default) and the whole touch pad will work simply as Select button in PS3 (I actually prefer it this way). Otherwise as suggested above try to either click in the middle of the pad or more towards right part of it.
