    How do I market board?

I'm a recent level 50 and I've never sold anything on the market board. I've collected quite a bit of junk overtime, and at one point, I dumped a huge amount of crafting items and other stuff into an NPC just to make room in my inventory. Just the other day, I finally got a retainer and realized that I could have her hold quite a bit of stuff. I'm starting to get a feel that I could make more money on the market board itself. So before I make the leap into the great unknown, I was hoping you guys could give some general tips on how to sell.

    1) How many items can I sell on the market at one time?
    2) Are there any advantages to sell an item at one city over another?
    3) Can I sell my items in multiple cities at once?
    4) Any tips to setting a good price?
    5) Any other market board related advice?

    1) 20 per retainer. Make a 2nd retainer if you haven't already.
    2) People who buy from the same city as the retainer pay a slightly smaller tax. Makes no difference for the seller. You can change retainer's location by speaking to the retainer vocate in the desired city.
    3) See 2
    4) Don't undercut by a huge margin, use the price history and current listings to make a good gauge. Varies by item and by server.
    5) Don't undercut by a huge margin, seriously.

Anytime you are not interacting with the retainer, they will be on the market listings for items you tell them to sell. You don't need to actively police it.

They don't pay any tax, only seller.

Also - note that standard selling tax is 5% but at some time in some cities it might be reduced to 2%. Finally - you can sell multiply amounts of stackable items - so choose visely how much you've put on sale as buyer must always purchase the whole stack as posted for sale. You need to revisit your retainers at least once a week otherwise they'll stop selling (if they still have anything left to sell). Check the selling price once a while and adjust if needed.

    There are two taxes.

The seller chooses the listed price, but when the item is sold, he/she will receive slightly less than that listed price. This is the seller's tax (and it's identified in the seller's interface when the listing price is chosen).

When a buyer looks at listings, the listed price is the amount he/she will pay if they're in the same territory as the selling retainer. If, however, they're in a different city, they'll have to pay more than the listed price (and they'll get a popup box asking them to confirm that final price including the out-of-region surcharge). This is the buyer's tax, and is applied according to where they're at at the time, but does not impact the amount the seller will receive.

The only way region affects the seller is indirectly. If a buyer sees that the lowest listed price actually ends up being higher after the regional tax is added, they might go to the next higher listed item that's in their territory (and therefore doesn't have that regional tax). So the chance of an item selling is influenced by the chance of potential buyers being in the same region. (This is, however, usually too hard to accurately predict for it to have a significant impact, at least as far as I've seen. Perhaps there are some servers in which a particular city becomes known for having a better market than other cities.)

Thanks everyone for the responses thus far. Please keep it coming. I just put 12 items on the market (I got a little sleepy to put 20 items). I looked at the market history and made mine match the 3rd highest price.

Am I on the right track?
Is market history only made up of successfully sold items?

It's a bit confusing at first - if you look at market "history" directly from the retainer's sell screen the frist window with prices which opens actually shows the current items on sale for those prices, only after opening the second window within this first one you'll se the actual sale history - it's easy to recognize as it has buyer's names and time + dates of purchases rather than reatainer names without times.

Ah, it feels good to finally be selling on the markets. Now if I could make enough money so that my free company could afford that medium sized house, I would be very happy. I generally don't undercut since I'm not in a huge rush to sell items, but I starting to think it's time for a couple of price cuts on a couple of items that have been sitting on my retainers for a few days now.

I did hear something interesting during a dungeon. I got a fine wax and heard from a member that a FC on his server was controlling the price of that item. Is price control common on servers? I thought that was a pretty interesting concept.

That was most likely someone using the retainer's sale slot as additional "storage" - "worst" case scenario they'll lost the item and gain 1 mill gil
