The reason for this is because combat is so fast paced, there simply isn't time to spend chatting about random stuff - unlike FFXI where combat was so slow you could easily get away with chatting while fighting. It's the price that had to be paid for having more faster combat (which players actually requested in 1.0 by the way - players wanted flashy, fast-paced battles like were shown in the original opening movie).

Nah, the far bigger cause is the whole duty finder system. Not only it queues you up with random people from god knows where, it is also cross world which would making friend totally useless.

It was the same in wow. Back pre dungeon finder you had people asking in chat in the big cities and the zones where the dungeon was. So you already were forced to talk to just join a dungeon run to begin with. If it was a good run you asked if you could x person on your friendlist for a later run since they are on the same server and you can always ask them again.
Once lfd came out it is exactly the same as in FFXIV. People click the button, wait till the window pops up and join. Then at best we got a hi/hello and then silent for the rest of the dungeon since you will most likely never see these people again.
So far i got 1 group in 3weeks of playing where it went further and it was my most enjoyable run yet and if i could added them to my friendlist i would have done it in a heartbeat.

You can still talk before a fight (to prevent a wipe) and after a fight (if the party wiped).
But nowdays many people just leave a party and join another party instead to talk about strategie to prevent wipes..

This is pretty much what I do as soon as I log in. Also it keeps me(or my clumsy nephew) from spewing robot sayings in another channel because if Im by my self it will just return the "no party members" error.

I had many, many people ask me how to return tells in the beginning(Im sure most just ask their FC now) or how did I reply to a tell to them so fast, even got called their hero. I think the new tutorial quest is a great idea and shouldn't take that much of their resources where they have to push back an expansion or something.

OP statements is kinda funny, it appears he is saying people would use it if they knew how when more then likely those folks just dont want to talk(at all) to him period

I actually wish I was new again to MMO's actually that feeling I will never have again.

actually they do... when YOU say the 1st words, that is.

PS3 players on the contrary often speak first, to say they won't be able to speak

Um, I'm a PS3 player with a keyboard and mouse hooked up to my console, and speak VERY often in parties, alliances, ect. Not sure what you're talking about lol.

It'll be a nerf to the chat system pretty soon.

Only if the RMTs catch on to this "party chat" feature, I hear there's gil to be made in that chatbox!

Every MMO has this function and most people will look around to figure it out or ask someone in game. Instead you seem to have just assumed it didn't exist and are trying to understand why. Quiet honestly I joined a party and instantly did /p. It just seemed pretty obvious. Lots of other games do it the same way.
