Just wondering if the event will be back next year? I had to stop playing for a few months and sadly missed getting the item.

As far as I'm aware, it's not coming back, as it was a unique event connected with FFXI's eleventh anniversary of service (there was a similar ARR crossover event in FFXI where the player had to hunt FFXIV spriggans for spriggan costumes and wands). So sadly if you didn't do it when it was available you've missed out sadly (although there is nothing stopping SE from bringing it back at a later date, I don't think they ever will though).
Ahh dang, thanks for the answer.
I recall Yoshi-P saying on the last live letter that they *may* bring it back, he still wasn't decided at the time.
I hope they do bring it back because I missed out on it too. How long was the event? 2 weeks?
I know lightning event is like 3 weeks and it even happened twice (Yes, I know why). So the crossover event should have been just as long.
I'd imagine its gone for good or at least that perticular event is, they could do another XI crossover I guess but with someone/something different.
If they bring it back though I hope theres a lil more story to it and more just a FATE, it was fun but still.
Also context or some kind of discription of who/what Shantotto is lol, me and a friend never played XI so while we did the event on skype we were like "so is she the bad guy of XI or twisted kinda good character?" (still dont know)

As I remember, the Shantotto cutscenes did end with a cliffhanger. So I think it will be continuing like the Hildibrandt quest one day.
Technically she's a protagonist of FFXI, albeit a very minor one originally (she has a few optional quests that had the character running afoul of her vindictive nature, and she had a tiny part in one Windurst story mission. Until she got her own add on mini expansion called A Shantotto Ascension in 2010 she was pretty much nothing more than a minor npc at best. Hence I have no idea why Square Enix have suddenly become obsessed with putting her into the spotlight - there are plenty of other characters in FFXI who had far more bearing on the plot than that demented taru BLM.
She won the most popular NPC competition that players voted on:

To think that one such as I should be so blessed
and invited to this party as a guest.
Yet should another have been chosen in my place
I would have cursed them to suffer death apace.
Shantotto had a huge following even before that mini expansion, and she figured in Treasures of Aht Urgan as well...Technically she's a protagonist of FFXI, albeit a very minor one originally (she has a few optional quests that had the character running afoul of her vindictive nature, and she had a tiny part in one Windurst story mission.
