    Chrono Cross Leveling System Idea

Ive posted this idea in a few other threads but thought id give it its own thread and see how others really thought of this idea.

    Main concept would be...

    1. Everyone would be technically level one
    2. You receive stats from gear and consumables
    3. Quests are deep thought stories and most require a group to complete
    4. Finishing quests reward in "stars"
    5. "Stars" serve different functions
    6. Abilities require a certain amount of "stars" to equip
    7. Equipment require a certain amount of "stars" to equip
    8. Quests require a certain amount of "stars" before they are available.
    9. This method the so called "level cap" would be raised just by simply adding in more quests, gear, and abilities. since there would be no "rank 50" or anything...just be the max amount of stars you could have. like lets say 200+

    Thoughts..

    1. With this system it would result in everyone who has leveled to rank 50 on any job to well..."start over"

    2. This system would require many changes to the world map and monster distribution...possibly making many more mobs aggressive and have to be fought in order to advance through the terrain.

    3. Large amount of "interesting" quests would have to be made at once.

    4. Normal mobs wouldn't give Sp so they would be only killed for farming/quests/or cause they aggroed you and you dont wanna die.

Hmm I don't know, I don't think it would be well implemented even if they tried to do something of that nature and it would be just way too much work for the game as it is now.

Also, I don't really like the fact that in your suggestion, character development = acquiring gears. While great gears should give you a fair advantage, I think that you base stats as a character should be what defines you.

Your system only have the advantage that since the gears define you with their stats, you can have different playstyles by equiping different gears. This though can also be achieved with the current leveling system we have + the gears.

Yes gear would define your character, but progression would be to complete the quests and unlock more stars. You can't equip the elite gears without first unlocking the appropriate amount of stars.

Well in Chrono Cross you could select from different kind of party members who were balanced, better at magic, evasion, etc.
That's most likely how FFXIV is gonna be. Your class will determine the attributes.
Also in chrono cross there was no real levels but there definately was leveling up. The level was basically like the physical level in FFXIV except that you didn't have to beat a whole bunch but only one boss monster. Each character in the party could then raise his stats to a certain limit determined by the player level.
That would mean you have to beat the story to have the maximum level, not that you have to get maximum level to beat the story.
But you would still have to grind each class to raise your stats. That system works in a massive story game but not in FFXIV :P
You would need 49 bosses and long story parts for each xD

ya the idea wouldn't be an exact copy and paste of Chrono Cross of course. And with the star method there wouldn't have to be 49 bosses...there could be hundreds! meaning yes the quests would still have to be somewhat lengthy but not like super super long...you can have shorter quests that still give stars and longer quests give a star and a gear reward which is where the stats are going to be coming from.

I'd like to try it out in a game, but Yoshi-P already promised he wouldn't do this.

While I'm not fond of level-based systems, I don't think I would like to trade it for having my gear define my character. I'd much rather see something that defines characters by skills. Something sort of like how in Lineage2 you used your SP to buy class skills, except have it so that there is a limited number of points to distribute (in other words, you can't buy everything within a job/skillclass, you have to pick your niche).
