Op. Check your controller settings. There is a setting to use xbox or ps symbols. It's just a toggle.

Tiggy, please read the entire OP.
Shug I had this exact same issue when I borrowed a friend's PS4 Controller. I used the DS4 tool to fix the issue. Once you run this program you will have two controllers installed in windows. The PS4 controller and "Xbox360 Controller". The app pretends to be an Xbox 360 controller, by using the input from the PS4 Controller.
This is a workaround for drivers that use old technology that newer games are moving away from. The default windows drivers for Xbox360 Controllers use the new technology, the default windows drivers for PS4 controllers use the old technology. Final Fantasy uses the newer technology, like most games.
As long as you set Final Fantasy to use the Xbox 360 controller, Triangle will be triangle on the hotbar and Cross will be Cross on the hotbar.
