I just tried it earlier.. feels like a very fresh and interesting world. Anyone tried this before?

I keep mine off cause i feel like it helps my PS3 run a little better, but yeah i do like running around without names better than all the names
I loath big name tags, I compromised and set it to have First name, with only the initial for the surname so "Shioban Mooney" > "Shioban M.".
Really wish I could just reduce the size of the text for those, might just turn it off all together.
Same thing with my UI, I moved everything as far to the side as I could and as small as I could to make it less crowded, was ruining the view for the most part with text and UI elements all over the place.

You see, when i turn them off entirely it's like it's an actual world and town! People running around, NPCs with no text above them, objects as well.. I tried and set everything to "When Targeted" and it just looks a lot more beautiful, especially in cities.

I tried turning off display names, but I wasn't quite the biggest fan of it. I tend to wave at people I know when I run by them, so without it on I'd never be able to know who's who. I may try it again, but for now I'm fine with them still on.
That said, what I have turned off is the mini-map and exp bar, and moved the Duty List to where the mini-map used to be, and it greatly reduced screen clutter. To be honest, there's very little point in using the mini-map, even for gathering since all of the nodes are often close by, and any enemies you're fighting are probably up in your face anyway. And there's also really no need for the exp bar, either, because you can check your exp totals on the Character screen. It's amazing just how much screen space is saved when you remove those two, and I hardly notice those two element's absence.
When I'm waiting on the DF queue and not moving anywhere, I'll sometimes do this while spinning the camera slowly. It looks pretty surreal.
No names definitely gives the game a new perspective! But like mentioned above, i love waving to people I know as well so for me it is rarely used. However when no one is on that I know, I venture into that world of no names and soak up the realistic atmosphere of a city that it gives us!
If you play with no names displayed long enough, you'll pick up the ability to recognize other players by their customized faces, hairstyles, hair and eye colors etc. provided they aren't heavily armored.
It would certainly have helped me recognize the melee we had swapped into our party in CT yesterday. Without a name tag (don't know why it wasn't showing), she was basically invisible to me, even when just standing alone beside Atomos.

Even when heavily armored, I can still recognize my tank friend just because of the colors he uses!
But yeah having names off, I can recognize people fairly better because I learned to check for that first. It's actually a lot more fun I think. Having names off is really nice though. The screen isn't cluttered at all and it feels more immersive. The only time I have names on is for people in my Party/Alliance but that's because that's for function. I always highly recommend it to my FC mates but everyone thinks I'm weird, haha.
