What ever happened to the interesting mobs?
Examples:
-Undead that agro to low health
-Chigoes that couldn't be target until they agroed (also very hard to see unless they moved)
-Poroggos that could cast 'death' and 'charm'
-Stegotaurs would use 'Mortal Ray' (if you looked into their eyes during this move you would die in 10 seconds)
-Tonberrys had 'Throat Stab' and 'Everyone's Grudge'
Throat stab could be avoided, but was extremely dangerous if you allowed it to land (dropped you to 10% health)
-UFOs in 'Sea' made you watch both the ground and the sky to avoid agro
-Bomb, Pots, etc. had Magic agro
-Ghosts that would 'curse' (reduces maximum hp/mp and movement speed) Hope you have Holy Water & Cursna
-Sea plants (don't remember the name) that only agroed while open, but ignored you while closed
The list goes on and on, but you get the idea. Basically, anything that requires a player to pay attention during game-play is a good thing!
Most of the time while I am logged into FFXIV I am 70% watching a television program instead of the game. This is because in FFXIV you can play on auto-pilot and you will be fine. There is very little reason to focus on what you are doing and this removes a lot of the fun.
Also, please bring back 'linking' mobs! Making sure the mob you were fighting didn't link with another of it's kind kept players on their toes, and made you have to adapt to the changing situation if a link occurred. Crowd control and the skill of your puller could make a big difference in the success of your party.
With a few exceptions, the current mobs just don't feel all that dangerous or interesting. Part of the reason for this is probably the fact that there is very little penalty for dying. In FFXI you would lose XP when killed and this gave players a reason to pay attention during dangerous situations. Some sort of death penalty (loss of 1-2 anima for a return?) could go a long way towards making the outcome of a battle carry more weight.
I realize that a lot of the better content in FFXI wasn't released until much later in the game's life, so I will wait patiently as the updates & expansions are developed. However, please keep those old-style interesting mobs in mind when planning future updates.
What was your favorite 'interesting' mob in FFXI?
