The lamia were an entire race of necromancers, I believe.
Random tangent: This game needs lamia. And they need to be an interesting part of the story, not forgotten like they were in XI :<

I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
Summoner was a storyline entity before it was possible to be playable as was Blue Mage, hell the only instance of Blue Mage was a single "Show me respect, I am a blue mage!"

Summoner was a Job in a huge majority of the games and Summoner was planned to be a playable job from the start. It was already programmed before ROTZ was released.

I dont really get why people can't accept having the two systems running in parallel? You'll want the versatility of classes for solo, you'll want the specificity of jobs for groups.
I'm really looking forward to it, especially once they start adding additional jobs on top of the first wave and crossing them between classes (Gladiator + Marauder = Berserker? Lots of possibilities)

There are some very Necromacerish elements surrounding Thm in xiv's story. In fact one of the initial side quests revolved around a head of a Uldah family enchanting bobbles that would cause the owner to raise up from the grave and seek out others owners. Of course the whole thing goes comically wrong when the Creator of the bobbles is killed.
This is not to say that we would be given access to a "Job" focused in the direction of controlling undead. That's more in the purview of the "Bad guy".

I'd like the part of the system which is used by ArchAge. They have 10 base attributes which can be combined. They'll have like 120 different jobs with different skill combinations. If that works with FFXIV is another thing.. but I can imagine that there will be some sort of advancing. Maybe a three level advancing? GLD > PLD > (insert uber jobname here). Like it'll need LV50 GLD to unlock PLD and then you have to level PLD from 1 to 50 and so on...
Leveling the PLD from 1 to 50 would assure that you learn/buy new skills during that time. I wouldn't like it if you could unlock a "title" and get new skills for that. So as Lvl 50 GLD you can be a LV50 PLD right away.
Maybe they can still work around the affinity stuff. Lets say you have level'd GLD, MRD and ARC. Combining a mixture out of those skill pools determine the new job and unlock better/newer skills.
At the moment we really have to be patient once again until more information are hitting us. ;(
P.S. I want my Blue Mage back :3 Hmm THM + PGL = Blue Mage!??!?!
Seriously Why?

Somewhere on these forums, one of the SE reps confirmed that if you get your GLA to 50, your PLD will also be 50.
Yes. Because people have time to level yet another class (YAC(tm)).
If you are noob, more leveling won't help you play better. It's just more hassle and harashment to other people.
If you are smart, you will get instant level cap, and learn to play anyway.
Anyway. I don't like specialized job idea. It's pointless step back from what here is it now.
They would better remove wepon-class binding, and let anyone wield anyweapon they like. With let's say weapon-specific skills.
And left current classes as Skills. User action from that skill = gain experience in that skill = profit.
And moreover, instead of adding specialization to current skills.. simply add more skills.
And on top of that, add add specization that need serval skills leveled to some point.
