Suggestion: Content that unlocks new skills

    Hello,

I'm writting this to suggest an idea that I've been kind of wanting for a while and was sort of givin in PVP but not in the actual game. Right now, with the speed of leveling and limited cross class skills, the only true means of character progression is ilvl. Now, I'm not making this thread to start a war on ilvl and vertical progression, but only suggestion that another aspect of character progression be added with optional skill trees.

Right now we have the addition of job lines, but only Arcanist has to choose a skill line. The other classes are pretty straight forward. What I'd like to see is some level 50 content that earns points upon completition, and those points can be saved up and spent to buy new skills. The skills may have restrictions like DoW, DoM, All classes, Healer roles, Tank Roles, etc...

This way, aside from grinding for gear we can also go to grind for new skills. Now, the skills should take up the same slots as cross class skills, so that there are more options than the current obvious choices.

I also think that there could perhaps be a system to "upgrade" old cross-classable skills to make some more viable, for example give mercy stroke a debuff effect such as defense down, slow, or attack down, to make paladin more inclined to use it. This is just an example.

I would really like to see more options as far as customization goes and while jobs are suppost to restrict how many available cross class skills you have, currently that doesn't really do much since there are only a couple useful ones per job anyways. This will add another dimension to endgame and more personal choice in equipping skills.

Sounds like FFXI's merit system, except done through quests instead of XP parties. Sounds good to me.

It would definitely add a new dimension do how people play their roles if there was a large variety in the skills someone could be able to buy, then that would mean that each player could find a way to play their role that met their specific play style. Bard for example could get addition songs at the cost of a cross class buffs like Blood for Blood or Internal release this would make that particular Bard more of a utility but hinder their overall damage. If we saw a large variety of skills than each job could potentially have a much wider variety of roles.

I wouldn't mind getting something like FFXI's quested weapon skill system as well. People might argue that it's just another grind, but hey, I wouldn't mind something like this to pass the time...

For those unfamiliar with it, after you reach a specific level (and in FFXI's case, skill level), you talk to an npc who gives you a trial weapon. While equipped with said weapon, you'd need to perform x amount of weaponskills on easy prey or stronger mobs until the latent effect on the weapon was removed. The amount needed would be lowered by participating in skillchains. After the latent is removed, you'd give the weapon back to the npc, and he'd give you a map that would take you to a spot for an nm would need to be killed. Upon killing the nm and returning to the npc, you'd receive a fancy new weaponskill.

I suppose in practice this is fairly similar to certain stages of obtaining our relic weapons, albeit with a longer grind.

Yea, kind of like that, except unlocked at 50 and far more organized/ fleshed out.

I don't have suggestions for how they are acquired, simply that it's different from tome acquisition and gives tokens that are exchanged for skills or skill upgrades.

Have a Matt like character in major dona who is unlocked at some point and opens new Dow and Dom skill trees for characters to progress in.

I guess it's a mix between the 1.0 skill buying and merits, but I think it would add a lot more depth and customization to the game

Can't wait to see the party finder groups farming said points, but requiring that you have said skills first before joining their group.

So that fact that a minority of people want to only pair up with optimized groups is a reason to leave a game void of skill trees or customization?

Sounds lame. Besides, PF is already filtered with ILvl and requiring previous clears so what's the difference.
