As an avid user of Steam, would love to be able to use Steam resources to play, but am pretty loathe to buy the game for a fourth time (PC 1.0 CE, PC 2.0, PS3 CE), even at 50% off. Is it possible to play the Steam version with an existing account?

You must buy it again and add the Steam key on the Mog Station (you won't get the 30 days, tho, as those are for new accounts). It can't be done the other way around.

Nope, there isn't. Imagine it from Steam's perspective. You would register a game you haven't bought through them, that made them no money, but use their infrastructure to download a 10GB client, presumably more than once. Contrary to popular belief, server space and traffic come at a price

Same thread has SE Kahuna saying that it has been forwarded...
Buying it for a fourth time? 1.0 players got 2.0 for free.
But like the others said you have to buy a Steam copy to get access to Steam's resources.
Still bought 1.0, that wasn't free, also bought a second copy to log on alt and main at same time as well as so could play early access in addition to the PS3/PS4 version. Steam would be #4.

For every other MMO on Steam, current players can add their account for free, it isn't like the download would happen again, as the game is already installed...
There is no difference between the Steam and Retail version
The game itself has no changes (same with FFXI) it simply becomes a stand-alone game once you've purchased it, just think of Steam as another vendor selling the game keys.
I'm, confused as to why you're buying a steam copy?
Pretty much every steam resource except for time-keeping is avaliable to you, simply add the game as a "third party programme" to your steam list and you can take screenshots, contact friends as well as using the steam overlay.
You're missing out on maybe 1-2 things here. (Unless i'm missing something super critical here)

All the steam version is doing is providing you with a key to register via the mog-station and the 100MB client download (perhaps it also installs the release candidate too, or 2.1 i'm not sure).
As for the "But I can download it via steam!"
You can already download it from their website, it won't be downloading any faster or slower;

I'm just completley curious as to why you'd buy it a second time for virtually nothing?
