As for why? Personally so I can be part of the "communities". I'm happy downloading my updates etc. from the normal method, but unless steam has a recognition module made or something, I'll never be considered to be playing the same damn game as anyone playing the steam edition.

I would, quite happily accept the "add non-steam version of a game sold on steam and participate in the same communities" method by the way, as I'm sure most would, though I don't speak for everyone.
