I'd say your friend is entitled to his feelings. PVP isn't for everyone, the chocobos ARE worthless, and while sure the GC seals may be helpful in the future, it sounds like the last thing he wants right now is a grind. He should take a break, play/do something else and come back at 2.2.

I'm not bored of the game yet but I can totally see how some would be. I certainly am ready for 2.2.
