Well tyvm.
It's nice to see something positive in regards to it.
See, the problem isn't that I want my friend to share the same preferences, it's that I'd like to figure out a way to convince him of trying to get out of the gear grind. I think once he got "coil ready" all his objectives in game changed. It's sad because he's smart....REALLY smart. And polite. He is truly a pleasure to play with.
This "lack of content" conversation has come up a lot in the forums, but this is the first time I've dealt with it in game. What I'm trying to do now is put myself in a position where I can understand the mindset of someone with the problem who isn't stating this problem in a trollish fashion. He'd never get on here and condone the tone of this forum as a whole for instance.
Here are some additional things I might bring up to him to try and persuade him:
*The chocobos
If they do incorporate chocobo specific duties/instances and they are actually fun, what will their level requirements be (chocobos). If you need a level 5 chocobo to go play some really fun dungeon, wouldn't you rather be prepared now?
*Grand Companies
The new ranks are coming. I assume in 2.2. There are an unlimited amount of possibilities considering. New gear, new consumables, etcetera. There's also a good chance the could be tied to fronlines ie lominsa vs Uldah etc. If anything else, maybe new vanities. Most mmo players I know are into vanities one way or another. It's a rather lacking justification, but it's something.
*PvP
It will only get better. Frontlines sounds like it could be amazing. Grinding ranks and marks out in what we have to work with now is boring, but wasn't fate grinding back in the day? Besides, he really understand the mechanics, he could be deadly.
*Perfectionist/consumptionist
If completion perfection is your thing, shouldn't the content you don't find engaging also be completed? Again, fate grinding reference.

And again, thank you to those of you trying to give me a different perspective in a respectful and mature manor.
@Kai
Thank you as well. And again, I'm sorry if I haven't addressed the well thought out comments ON BOTH SIDES....there's just a lot of stupid comments to weed through right now.
