I played FFXI, granted I quit long before this game came out. In any case, everything I ever did in that game was either 1. Leveling up, 2. Obtaining gear, 3. Obtaining gil so I can purchase more gear. Again, I think I quit after the expansion that came after Rise of the Zilart came out, so I don't have much experience past that point. I didn't really view fishing or camping monsters (for gear) as content though, which were popular passtimes back when I played.
Regardless of whether you consider content or not doesn't change the fact that it was indeed something you could spend time doing in order to obtain gear. By most definitions it is content. Also, everywhere but Japan released with Rise of the Zilart packaged in. You must mean Chains of Promathia.I played FFXI, granted I quit long before this game came out. I didn't remember the name of it (I was like 21 when I played this, im almost 30 now), but yes that was it. And yes, I suppose you could call it content. The context of the post you quoted was that someone said FFXI was a game that had tons of content to go through when you had already achieved the best gear possible. In my opinion, farming monsters for gear that is worse than what you have is not content, that's just filler. You are no longer progressing, you are just stalling until something else comes out for you to actually progress, which would be content. Now, whether or not you enjoy the filler period is completely subjective. I'm not arguing that.Regardless of whether you consider content or not doesn't change the fact that it was indeed something you could spend time doing in order to obtain gear. What I am saying is that most MMOs do not have a lot of truly worthwhile tasks to complete once you have obtained the best gear possible for your chosen character/class/whatever. This has always been my experience and I am not shocked or disgusted by seeing it happen in FF14, so I am just genuinely curious as to why people are freaking out over it in this game.
FFXI : just leveling to 75 the 1 job, was months of content, and not touching any expansion (other than exp zones for leveling like the jungle that was zilart zone) was time consuming , missions , quests (for scrolls ) ,reputation , AF , limit breaks , crafting ,bcnm, farming gil ,ect

"Why are people freaking out over it in this game????"
I'm thinkin' probably because SO MANY PEOPLE ARE ALREADY AT END GAME. Not just the dedicated hardcore raiders are shut out...we can get the best there is with 8-man grouping. And we were told from the beginning this game STARTS AT 50.
Wish there would have been an asterisk beside that statement (repeated more than once) which noted: we are putting out a game with a vision that you can quickly get the leveling up to 50 out of the way so you can really start having FUN and THAT starts at about level 50. So...zoooooom up and Look Forward To The Real Fun which begins then. Let me reiterate, aside from self-described completionists, many, many people are now at endgame who did NOT accelerate through the levels in a week of living in the game.
Many, many of us touched upon other aspects of the game and took a full 4 months or so and we have still arrived at endgame with the issues which keep being brought up in posts in this forum. Now What. Really. Now What.
In other games, it was a given that you had 'side' content of various sorts but that the leveling would take some dedication and attention if that were your goal and for us to enjoy the journey blah blah blah. You basically didn't get to raid level without knowing your class well; if you pl'd your way there it showed. Here, who gets power leveled really? A few of the harder runs at the very top. Why? CAUSE WE CAN DO IT JUST LIKE YOSHI SAID... efficiently, effectively, little along the way needed which would slow us down, and then: We Could Start Having The Real Fun...at 50.
Thats why more people in this game are crazed about what the hell to do with themselves that has merit, satisfaction and reward AT 50, When Does The Fun continue??????
...and from the Gridania forest mysts proceed the souls of warriors and heroes; among which I am honored to serve as part of the One.
Just because it is a side grade, or a downgrade, or not specifically part of end game progression does not invalidate this from being content. You're definition is extremely narrow, and most people would disagree that "content" is only the parts that count to progression. For many people anything that can be done counts as content. Cause..I dunno...content by definition is simply...
content 1 (ˈkɒntɛnt)
— n
1. ( often plural ) everything that is inside a container: the contents of a box
2. ( usually plural )
a. the chapters or divisions of a book
b. a list, printed at the front of a book, of chapters or divisions together with the number of the first page of each
3. the meaning or significance of a poem, painting, or other work of art, as distinguished from its style or form
4. all that is contained or dealt with in a discussion, piece of writing, etc; substance
5. the capacity or size of a thing
6. the proportion of a substance contained in an alloy, mixture, etc: the lead content of petrol
I bolded the ones that probably have the most relevance, but even some of the other definitions could be considered semi-valid here.
So by this logic we should all be over the moon if yoshi for some reason decides to only add lv1-lv25 fights and quests. It's content after all. It's a smart remark quoting a dictionary, but you damn well know we are talking about Worthwile content here.Just because it is a side grade, or a downgrade, or not specifically part of end game progression does not invalidate this from being content. Kweh?
By this definition I do indeed still have stuff to do. That armorer GM has been trying to get me to kill rats every time I go near her. That level 2 quest is still out there waiting for me to finish it so I will have cleared all the content!!!!
