I haven't played FFXIV in a few months due to school and life reasons. I've been thinking about rejoining now that I have free time again.
I remember when I stopped playing that I started getting burnt out by playing so much. Has much changed in the past few months? Is it worth resubscribing?
Better wait for 2.2
Is the population in game really decreasing already!? I'm shocked. I wonder where everyone is going? There's not much competition out there atm so seeing those images below is a little dis-heartening...
PS: I just returned from a 2 month hiatus myself. I got completely burned out due to constant grinding. Plus I have a 1yr old who needs my attention so I can't keep up with my friends who get more time to play than me...

The game doesn't seem like it's 'depopulating' to me - I still tons of people around in Revenant's Toll or the three cities, obviously the time of day has a lot to do with it as well, there will always be 'peak times' when most players are on and 'quiet times' when most players are offline, usually sleeping.
Even FFXI was like this - in fact FFXI was worse where I was used to large periods of time when zones were empty for the reasons I've already mentioned. Server populations are not static - they fill and empty with the clock.

If anything the game has been getting consistently worse, so I'd say no.

Seeing how quality has decreased, and there's more pressure on quantity.
1) Most of the new gear has just been re-skins of things we already have. Lazy/10
2) The writing in 2.1 is even worse than the vanilla game
3) 2.1 destoying what little grasp the economy had
4) Bribing people to log on every day to do monotnous fetch-quests for mounts/ minions, and dyes
5) Most of the new enemies being re-skins of enemies we've already seen
6) PvP just being a broken and uninspired mess
7) Treasure Maps ruining demand for crafters, and gatherers good
8) CT Gear making i70 crafted gear even more useless
There's a bunch more, but following this trend of rehash, reuse, recycle, reskin old content- giving bland and uninspired content with long grinds to artifically induce game times (as well as fetch quests).
Making old content useless.
I'm sure there's some I've missed, but I do not have high hopes for the future of this game.
New Classes/Jobs? Sounds cool, until we find out it's the same ol' rotations on the same ol' enemies.

Several groups I know that have been running coil for months have quit, and far fewer people are doing FATEs any more if you still have characters/classes to level. Still, there are enough people playing to be able to do things if you play during the server's prime time.
The DF wait time picture was taken during Aegis prime time, so population was not the problem here. The point of the photo is to illustrate a major flaw in the in the design of the game, which is that far more tanks are required to run instances than exist. Waiting 110 minutes to join a dungeon for a subscription game, even as a DPS, and even during population lulls, is horrible.
Just wait for 2.2, like others mention, population is decreasing simply because people ran out of things to do besides grinding Coil and EX primals.
