There is no possibility to have as many cards as options in the game, so basically, some people (the majority) will have some left-over Crysta in their account. This is free spare cash for SE, at no interest rate. Timed by the number of players using prepaid cards, this actually makes quite a sum.

This scheme is unfortunately legal in most, if not all, countries (at least in US and Europe when the servers shut down they have to cash us back that leftover, but that's it). You may want to support that, but I certainly don't want.

Also that's totally overlooking that the retainer is basically more inventory space: something that every other game offers for free (or in-game currency).
then the difference remains in your balance and is used towards next month's subscription. Also I do recall SE saying they had plans to use crysta for purchases other than subscriptions. Your argument doesn't hold water.
