changing classes help please!

So Ive been trying to do my leatherworking, and you are just supposed to equip your tool right? It will no let me. It says I cant equip a shield (?) with a two handed weapon. Im a Pug btw and Ime super new to the game and none of my old mmo pals arent playing it yet so Im kinda flying blind. Ive looked online so thought ide see if anyone here could help.

when you equip two hands tool or weapon on your main hand slot, you will not be able to equip anything on your off hand slot.

Leatherworkers (and all DoH/DoL) have 2 "weapons" - main hand and second...maybe you are trying to equip the secondary tool whilst with your PUG mits on? Thar definately wont work!

Assume you have joined the Leatherworker guild and what not?

When you equip a new weapon/tool, and dress yourself appropriately you can create a character set, for easy switching. Go to your character window, and above your picture there is an icon (like a paper list). Click on this. It opens all your registered sets. At the top of this pop-window is a little button with a + sign. click on that to register the new set. It will then be available for quick change.
Remember to update your sets whenever you buy/gain/win new gear (little ciclical arrow button near your gear set list icon in the character window).

It sounds like you are trying to equip a secondary tool, tho - so just make sure you use the Leatherwork Primary Tool....and then register your set (as above), so changing will be lots easier

To follow up on what's already been said, to get your LTW primary tool you MUST go register at the guild in Gridania. They give you the level 1 primary tool and it is the only way to get it.
For leatherworker your primary tool should be a head knife. If you have an awl, that is the secondary tool which can only be equipped once the primary tool is already equipped.

To expand on Shmunkster, once you have created an outfit set you can also drag it to a hotbar slot. I have a permanent bar that has all my crafting classes on it for easy switching.

Leatherworker has two types of tools: A Headknife and an Awl. The Headknife is the primary tool, while the Awl is the secondary. Try to equip the Headknife and not the Awl.

While you can register and create a set for quick switching, to initially access the items, access your armoury system (ctrl+I or through the character menu). Go to your primary weapon slot and you should see a "weathered head knife" or some similarly named tool. Equip and you are good to go. Be aware you may be naked and so will want to buy some crafting armor to help you out. Equip that armor in the same way as before, using the appropriate slot.

BTW, if you have by chance sold the "weathered head knife" (thinking the Lv.5 leatherworker quest gave you the "amateur's awl" as a primary tool upgrade) and cannot use the lv.8 "bronze head knife" (Lv.10 leatherworker quest reward) because your are only Lv.6, you will have to buy a new Lv.1 primary tool from the npc vendor, Admiranda, in the Old Gridania marketplace.

ah it was the primary tool I think at some point i forgot what it was for and got rid of it. TY all for the help!

There's a good way to make sure you don't accidentally do that. Whenever you unlock a new class, immediately equip the gear you want for it and hit the plus button to create a new gear set. Whenever you update your gear set hit the button that looks like a reload button.

Any gear you have saved to your gear set will show up in your inventory with an icon that looks like a list. This icon means you are using that piece on some class or another, so don't get rid of it.
